Sylvia Ann Blackwell passed away peacefully in her sleep in Hammond, LA on Saturday, October 4, 2025. A native of New Orleans and lifelong resident of the Northshore, age 89 years. She was a devoted Daughter, Mother, Grandmother and Great grandmother. Her humor, wit and wisdom touched countless lives.
Sylvia was born on November 6, 1935 in New Orleans, La. The oldest daughter of the late Marie Louise Martinez and late Russell V. Blackwell. She was preceded in death by her sister Suzanne. Sylvia was a life long resident of St. Tammany Parish. She lived her early years in Folsom at Mocking Bird Hill where the Blackwell’s have made their home since 1810. In her teens the family moved to Covington. After high school at Lion High she attended LSU and later moved to New Orleans. In 1955 she married Fredrick Terry III. Together they raised 3 sons Greg, Marc and Ricky.
Sylvia is survived by her son Greg, grandson Sage and son Ricky. Sylvia is also survived by her sister Cynthia and nieces Sophia, Lisa and Victoria and the late Christopher Santopadre Jr.
She was preceded in death by her son Marc Terry, who was survived by his wife Carla, daughter Paige Terry Stuart and her husband, Adam, and Sylvia’s great grandchildren, Cayden and Chloe.
Sylvia will always be remembered for her love for all animals and the years of work fighting for endangered species and protection of the environment. She also loved spending Saturday mornings going to garage sales collecting treasures and working with local animal rescue group START. She also loved watching the Bold and Beautiful and let’s not forget her love of the N.O. Saints. Sylvia will be dearly missed and will forever live in our hearts and memories.
