SISTER DAMIAN TUCKER, SSND
The second child and only daughter was born to Emily (Miranda) and John Tucker on September 20, 1930 in Baton Rouge and given the name Betty Ann. She grew up with four brothers, John, James, George, and Roy.
Betty attended St. Anthony Grade school, staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame and St. Joseph Academy, staffed by the St. Joseph sisters. After graduation in 1948, Betty entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) and was professed in 1948.
Betty, now Sister Damian, spent the next 30 years ministering in the parochial schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans as teacher and principal. Responding to a call for ministry to children and young adults with special needs, she went to Dallas and spent 19 years as teacher and, later, as administrator, helping young adults develop independent living skills.
S. Damian returned to New Orleans and ministered to the elderly at Malta Park and The Ponchatrain for several years before retiring at St. Mary of the Pines, in Chatawa, MS. In 2019, she moved with the community to St. Anthony's Gardens in Covington, LA. As her health declined, S. Damian transferred to Trinity Trace Care Center in 2023 where she passed away peacefully in the evening of September 24. She is survived by her brother Roy (Peggy) and many nieces and nephews.
Sister Damian was a fun-loving person and delightful community member. She had a great love and appreciation for her students. May she now rejoice with God as she enters eternal life and is blessed for her life of service.
