Selby Jay Gillis Jr.

Selby J. Gillis Jr., age 83, of Slidell, LA, passed away unexpectedly on January 20, 2025, from natural causes.  Born in Houston in 1941, Selby graduated with honors from Fortier High School in 1959 and Southeastern Louisiana University.  He served in the National Guard before embarking on a distinguished career in the fruit industry, ultimately serving as Divisional Vice President of Deciduous Products at Standard Fruit Co. (later Dole Fresh Fruit Co.) and Chiquita Banana.  Selby was known for his keen intellect, sharp wit, and a profound love of the outdoors.  An avid fisherman, horse enthusiast, and skilled skier, he embraced life with vivacity and spirit, matched only by his commitment to his family and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, Selby and Grace Gillis; his sister, Patricia Wiegand; and niece, Lisa Cullom.

Selby is survived by his son, Douglas E. Gillis (Jennifer); grandchildren Cristelle Ellison Gillis, Marissa Wood (Chase), and Douglas Gillis Jr.; his brother, Greg Gillis; and his niece, Lynn Cullom.  He also leaves behind his first wife, Cindy Cadis Gillis, with whom he shared 27 years of marriage.  His later years were profoundly enriched by his marriage to Judith Gillis (nee Ellenbogen), who predeceased him in 2023.  They shared 22 years filled with love, travel, and mutual support.  Selby is warmly remembered by Judith’s daughters, Renee Killen Krutsick (Jack), Jennifer Hopkins George (Jeff), and Amy Beth Piccinino (Rob), and their children, who knew him as a beloved step-grandfather.  He will also be missed by his faithful dog, Scottie.

A Celebration of Life private memorial service will be held to celebrate Selby's life at a later date.  His legacy of laughter, wisdom, and kindness will be cherished by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to a charity supporting animal welfare would honor his passion for nature and animals.
