Robert “Bert” Louis Fontcuberta of Covington, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024. Beloved husband of Virginia King Fontcuberta. Devoted father of Alissa Pierce and her husband John, and Hope Westmoreland and her husband Cody. Loving Pop Pop of Laurel Westmoreland, Olivia Pierce, Conner Westmoreland, and Miles Westmoreland. Brother of Diane Fontcuberta Smith, Mollie Fontcuberta Revell and her husband Jerry, Tom Fontcuberta and his wife Martha, and Anne Fontcuberta. Son-in-law of Doris King. Brother-in-law of Roy Cooper, Marie King Humphries and her husband Carl, Kenny King, and Kathy King. Bert was also loved and admired by his many nieces, nephews, and God-children. Bert is preceded in death by his parents, the late Joseph and Mildred Fontcuberta, his late siblings, Michael Fontcuberta and Jodie Fontcuberta Cooper, his brother-in-law, Forrest Smith, and his father-in-law, Odie King. He was also the faithful critter protector of Cricket (dog), Remi (dog), Zoey (cat), 2 chickens, the late Izzy (dog), the late Woody (duck), the late Spike and Fred (turtles), and countless other beloved dogs, cats, turkeys, ducks, chickens, goats, rabbits, guinea pig, turtles, fish, frogs, lizards, dragonflies, and more.
A lifelong resident of St. Tammany Parish, Bert was affectionately known as “The MapMan.” Bert began drawing maps at his father’s surveying company at age ten. He was an entrepreneur and business owner before he had a driver’s license. His first ventures were Bert’s Tractor Service as well as Earthmoving Operations. Bert was a Renaissance Man who worked many jobs over the years including: Chairman of the Board with Survey’s Inc., The News Banner Newspaper, located buried phone cables with Colony Communications and C & D Utilities, Real Estate Agent, a drafter with Fontcuberta Surveys, Survey Operations Manager with BFM, a cartographer with MapSource and New Orleans Map Company, assisted with wetland mitigation with Hydrik Consultants, and a Campaign Manager. He was a businessman who founded MapMan, which drew street maps of St. Tammany Parish as well as several parishes in Southeast Louisiana. He also acquired New Orleans Map Company and The Lampstand Christian Books and Gifts. Most recently, he was the Business Manager for Norman the Carpenter.
Bert was a lifelong public servant, a friend to all, and helped anyone in need. He diligently served and protected his community beginning with the Mandeville Police Department as a Jr. Deputy. Throughout his lifetime, he served many roles including: Crossing Guard for the City of Covington, Captain of the Covington Police Reserve Unit, President of Louisiana Association of Reserve Peace Officers, Deputy Sheriff with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Reserve Unit, Deputy Assessor with the Parish of St. Tammany, Fire Commissioner with Fire District 13 in Goodbee, and was the current Drainage Inspector with the Town of Abita Springs.
Bert’s hobbies included dumpster diving, junktiquing, collecting rocks, walking on the beach of Lewisburg, collecting acorns, planting trees, and wood carving ducks, birds, and walking sticks. He was a parishioner of St. Peter Catholic Church in Covington. Member of Louisiana Wildfowl Carvers & Collectors Guild. Friend to all critters; Bert loved all of God’s creatures, especially the small ones. Bert loved spending quality time with his grandchildren. He found beauty in all things and people.
Visitation will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, LA 70433, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. First Responders are invited to line the funeral procession along Jefferson Ave., starting at St. Peter Catholic Church, and continuing toward the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center to honor his final drive to his final resting place. The procession will continue down Jefferson Ave., turn onto Columbia St. to proceed to the cemetery. Internment in St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery, 75376 River Rd., St. Benedict, LA 70457. Reception following at St. Jane de Chantal Church in St. Jane Hall, 72040 Maple St. Abita Springs, LA. In lieu of flowers, Bert wished that you celebrate his life by spending time with your family and friends creating lasting memories, which were his most precious “possessions.” Bert wrote, “People come and go again in life. You can’t worry about the gaps in time. All you can worry about is the time you have with them and as you get older the more you realize that making the most of that time is all that matters.”
