Ollie Mae Rita Ramsey Walker was born June 30, 1937 in Abita Springs, La. to the late Ruby Austin and the late Melvin Quave. She was married to the late James Sydney Walker. At a young age, Ollie was baptized and became a dedicated member of Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Perkins. Later, she transferred her membership to Mt. Zion Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, where she was pastored by the late Reverend Clayton H. Neal. She thoroughly enjoyed her role leading the welcome committee where she had the opportunity to greet and assist visitors. Ollie started her education at Abita Springs School and later attended Rosenwald High School in Covington, Louisiana. Ollie began her career at The Longbranch Hotel in Abita Springs, La. as a housekeeper. Throughout her career, she cared for residents at local nursing facilities. She then transitioned into domestic housekeeping, where she not only maintained the homes of her clients but also played a significant role in raising their children, caring for them as if they were her own. Her meticulous housekeeping work at Dr. Randall Foto’s office earned her the admiration of both patient and employee, reflecting her unwavering dedication to excellence.
A loving mother and caregiver, Ollie nurtured many children in the Abita Nursery Subdivision, leaving a lasting impact on her community. Ollie’s most significant role was as a missionary, where she dedicated herself to prayer and providing support to others. She established several prayer lines that became a source of hope and encouragement for many individuals during their most challenging times. Her compassionate approach offered comfort and renewed faith to those in need. She is survived by her children: Carl Walker (Judy) of Abita Springs, Louisiana; Darrell Walker of Amite, Louisiana; Schleta Johnson of Covington, Louisiana; Ann Rushing (Johnnie) of Abita Springs, Louisiana; and Felicia Walker (Nathelda) of Abita Springs, Louisiana. Additionally, she is survived by her daughters-in-law, Beverly Holden Ramsey and Amanda Parker Walker. She will be deeply missed by her sister-in-law, Betty Weaver Ramsey of Covington, Louisiana. Ollie’s cherished legacy includes 20 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great- grandchildren. Also, she will be remembered fondly by her godchildren, Rhonda Austin, Audrey Fairley, and Geneva Jones, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Ollie was preceded in death by her father, Melvin Quave; her mother, Ruby Austin; her son, Harold Ramsey Sr.; her son, Henry Walker; and her granddaughter, Jordan Walker. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: Rufus Hall (Patsy) of Chicago, Illinois; Joseph McKenzie (Fannie) of Independence, Louisiana; Ollie Ramsey Jr. of Covington, Louisiana; Edward Ramsey (Florence) of Abita Springs, Louisiana; and William Austin of Chicago, Illinois. Ollie’s legacy of love, care, and community service will forever be cherished by those who knew her.
