Lawrence Bertoniere, Sr. Obituary

Lawrence Joseph “Bert” Bertoniere, Sr., a proud veteran, devoted husband, loving father, and passionate animal advocate, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the age of 83.  Bert was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana where he lived until he joined the Navy in 1959.  He proudly served 21 years and retired as a Chief Petty Officer.  After his retirement from the Navy, he continued his service to the community through his work for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years, retiring in 2006.  A man of quiet strength and strong convictions, he was known for his sharp wit, endless jokes, and spirited political debates that could light up any room.  Beyond his service and his humor, Bert had a heart for all things living.  He found joy tending to his garden, caring for his beloved plants, and dedicating time to the feral cat colonies in his community.  He was known to be an exceptional fisherman, often remembered with a rod in hand and a story to share.

Bert is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Herbert Bertoniere & Ruth Serpas Bertoniere, his son, Lawrence Joseph “Frog” Bertoniere, Jr., Brothers, Roy Bertoniere and Herbert Bertoniere, sisters, Ruth Bertoniere Quinlan and Dolores Bertoniere Hunter.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Mary Howard Bertoniere and their 2 children Sean Bertoniere and Stephanie Bertoniere.  He is also survived by his children Desiree Bertoniere Billiot, William “Billy” Bertoniere, and Laurie Bertoniere Doherty, and their mother Linda Irwin Bertoniere.  He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter in his 12 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren, 3 nieces, 6 nephews, countless cousins, friends, and his beloved cats.

His presence will be deeply missed but his memory will continue to live on in stories shared, laughter remembered, and the unconditional love he gave so freely.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
