Larry Popovich, of New Orleans, after living a very active and love-filled life of 85 years, passed from life here on earth on December 16, 2025, to live his eternal life with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born in New Orleans on May 21, 1939, to George Popovich and Beulah Meaux Popovich. He was the brother of Randle “Randy” Popovich and Yvonne Case. He attended John McDonogh High School on Esplanade, where he met his future wife, Delia Gannon Screen. He played football, ran track, played baseball, and his favorite sport, basketball. He was known in the community as “SWISH.” While in his senior year of high school, he was voted the best dancer of the 1959 class.
In or about 1975, he became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At that time, he turned his life over to Jesus Christ, which made him become a better husband, father, sibling, uncle, and grandfather (Paw-Paw Delia). In addition, he spent over 50 years spreading the gospel through the teaching of the Book of Mormon. His forever love of his belief in Jesus Christ was witnessed daily by all who knew him and met him. His love for Jesus Christ will be greatly missed.
He spent over 55 years of his life in the jewelry business, where he became a great businessman working in tandem with his wife for many decades. He was always the most honest gentleman, trying to make the fairest and most honest sale for the customer.
He was a lover of all sports and played all sports. In recent years, he had become involved with the Senior Olympics of Jefferson Parish. This year, he won 4 gold medals (free throws, darts, horseshoes, and golf). He was an avid golfer. He was playing his last round of golf for 2025 on his favorite golf course in Diamondhead, Mississippi, when he became ill.
His most memorable trait was his love for his wife and family. He was married to Maw-Maw Delia for over 65 years. He was an extremely devoted husband and father who will be missed forever. He was always present to share a gospel, a prayer, a life lesson, or just a funny story. He and his personality will be forever missed.
He is the loving father of Larry Popovich (Stephanie), Craig, Kirk, and Delia Popovich Taylor (Patrick). He is the loving grandfather of Zachary Popovich (Kellee), Ethan Popovich (Amanda), Courtney Pittman Gautreau (Cody), Wyatt Popovich (Michelle), and Lily Mottern (Austin). He is the loving great-grandfather of Oliver Gautreau, Ezra Popovich, Scarlett Gautreau, Clifford Popovich, Julian Popovich, and Elle Popovich.
