John Davis Hewitt IV, 78, of Mandeville, La., passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024, with his wife by his side. He was a native of Long Beach, Ca., and a resident of Mandeville, La. John was a member of the Lutheran faith. He was a United States Navy Seal Veteran serving in the Vietnam War. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Bronze Star with Combat “V” and Purple Heart with Bronze Star Medal. John graduated from college with a Degree in Marine Biology. He helped with the design and opening of the Aquarium of the Americas and was Director of Husbandry until he retired after 30 years of dedication. John was an avid Golfer, Scuba Diver, collecting for the Aquarium, specialized in Shark Biology and was an expert in his field. He was instrumental in mentoring many co-workers in his field of expertise. John was a member of the Aquarium and Zoo Association (AZA).
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Davis Hewitt III and his Sister, Ann Hewitt.
John is survived by his Wife of 29 Years, Jennifer Coates Hewitt of Mandeville, La., Sons, John “Jack” Davis Hewitt V of Baton Rouge, La., Sean Davis Hewitt and wife Roni of Baton Rouge, La., Grandchildren, Kai Hewitt and Rebecca Hewitt.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Arrangements are entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home of Covington, La.
