Irene Jule (Medico) Oliveri Carlson

Mrs. Irene Jule Medico Oliveri Carlson passed away peacefully at home with her daughter at her bedside on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. Native of Carbondale, PA, former resident of Orange County and Riverside County, CA, and most recently a resident of Covington, LA, age 98 years. Loving mother of Irene Drews and her husband Don, of Covington, LA.; devoted grandmother of Kevin Drews and his wife, Jessica, and Ryan Drews and his wife, Leah; loving great grandmother of Blake, Jade, William, and Henry. Irene is preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Oliveri, who passed away in 1981, and her second husband, Richard Carlson, who passed away in 2002.

Irene was the youngest of 3 girls born to the late Michael and Julia Medico.  She grew up in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Later working in the defense industry during WW2 folding parachutes for the military.  She  married Charles Oliveri in 1948,  and in 1956, they made the journey to California with their 2 year old daughter.  After Charles' death in 1981, Irene worked various retail jobs but thoroughly enjoyed her position as Assistant Manager of Sunrise Assisted Living in Palm Springs, California.  She married Richard Carlson in 1985 to whom she was married for 17 years until his passing. 

Irene enjoyed video poker in the Indian casinos as well as her trips with her daughter across the Mojave Desert to Laughlin, Nevada.  She loved her little dog, Tina, who was her "fierce" protector.  Irene moved with her daughter and son in law, Don, to Louisiana in 2012.  She was blessed to have her grandsons Kevin (Jessica), and Ryan (Leah) local, which enabled her to enjoy her 4 great grandchildren Blake, Jade, William and Henry whom she dearly loved.  Daily crossword puzzles kept her mind sharp as a tack even up to the day of her death.  Her daily devotion to the Blessed Mother in the Holy Rosary was never omitted.  She was a viewer and supporter of Heart of the Nation televised Sunday mass as well as supporter of St. Jude Children's Hospital, and St. Labre Indian Missions.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Prayer Service at Serenity Funeral Home, 20419 Hwy 36, Covington, LA, on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00 AM with gathering beginning at 10:00 AM. Private interment will be at St. Lazarus of Bethany Memorial Park, Covington, LA.
