It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Debra Jo Lala, one of the BEST of Old Mandeville, who left this world peacefully on October 13, 2024, at the age of 74. Debra was a devoted daughter, mother, sister, and friend, whose spirit and kindness touched the lives of everyone around her.
Born on October 21, 1949, to her beloved parents Elton and Josephine (Sharp) Lala, Debra was a source of strength for her family. She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Lala Turlich, and her brother, Eric Lala. The bond they shared was unbreakable, filled with laughter, love, and together shared countless moments.
Debra was the cherished mother of her two sons, Gabriel and Hamilton Hall, who were the center of her whole world and made her extremely proud. She dedicated herself to raising them in the best way she could with endless unconditional love, instilling in them the values of compassion and resilience that she embodied throughout her life. She delighted in boasting to friends and family of the completion of their various achievements in life.
In addition to her role as a mother, Debra shared a deep and loving partnership with Keith Jenkins, who brought so much laughter to her life over many years. Together, they created memories filled with lots of love. She also was profoundly loved by her nieces Erica Simoneaux and Natalie Turlich and nephew, Michael Turlich, all whom will miss her dearly.
Debra was a devoted Maw Maw to her one and only granddaughter, Kalli Probst, who was the light of her life. Kalli filled her world with so much delight and happiness that it could never be measured, the days spent with her were filled with joy and love. Their bond was truly special. Debra took great pride in Kalli’s accomplishments and admired the wonderful person she was becoming. In Kalli, Debra found herself a new source of inspiration and delight that will forever hold a place in her heart.
A retired Service Tech from BellSouth, Debra had a great passion for serving the community of Mandeville through many organizations such as BellSouth Pioneers and the Keep Mandeville Beautiful program, as well as her time as a Visiting Angel. Her warmth and wisdom drew people to her, and she was always ready to lend a listening ear or a helping hand. She had an innate ability to see the beauty in everyday moments, reminding us all to appreciate the little things in life.
An avid book and plant lover, she was also known for her love of music that resonated deeply in her soul. She was known for playing her favorite songs loud, dancing with abandon, and inspiring others to join her in celebrating life. She valued her many friendships, some of whom since childhood. For them Debra will be remembered for her generous heart, her unwavering loyalty, and her ability to brighten any room with her smile. She loved to reminisce on the “good times” with close friends.
Debra Jo Lala will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts. Her spirit lives on in the music she played, the love she shared, and all the lives that she touched. Now, we can all imagine her dancing amongst the clouds in heaven, surrounded by the melodies she loved, people she cherished, her spirit forever free and joyful!
