Ruth Asher Obituary

Ruth Phelps Asher, 93, of New Orleans passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 of natural causes. Ruth worked for the New Orleans Police Department for over 50 years in Public Affairs as the awards coordinator, most recently as the historian. There, she was the recipient of many awards, including multiple commendations, a Charles E. Dunbar Career Service Award in recognition for unselfish service, and was the first civilian to be awarded a NOPD “Historian” badge, number 1.

In addition to her passionate service to the police department, she was known for her excellent (lip smacking) gumbo, and her love for her family. Her spit-fire personality and love for adventure led her to Hawaii, London, and other parts of the world to ensure she did not miss important events in her children and grandchildren’s lives. You would often find her enjoying the antics of her great-grandchildren, at the “show” watching the latest movie or shopping the biggest sales at the mall.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Asher, and her siblings, Russell, Lillian, Thelma, Mary and George. She leaves behind two daughters, Gloria Asher Green (William) and Gwen Asher Boudreaux (Mark), four grandchildren, Kelly Dupre’ (Raphael), Scott Green, Jeremy Boudreaux (Amy), and Jessica Battaglia (Adam), as well as six great-grandchildren, William Chase, Aleksandur, Isabelle, Canaan, Jack, and Ciri.

Ruth always said, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” and she used every moment of her life to positively impact those around her.

Private Services will be held on a later date.

The family is requesting NO FLOWERS.
