Micheal Fletcher Obituary

Micheal Eber Fletcher Sr. was a devoted son, husband, father, and friend. Micheal joined his ancestors in Heaven on September 26, 2016, at the age of 66. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and resided in Slidell. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Cerlida G. Fletcher. Cerlida and Micheal met in grade school, dated in high school, and eventually married and built a beautiful family. Micheal was the father of Chevela Green (husband Jerron), Carita Ducre (husband Gregory), Chentrell Williams (husband Dave), Elizabeth Fletcher and Micheal Fletcher Jr. He was the brother of Ricky Arnez Fletcher Sr., Ida Barbara Holmes, Sharon Johnson, Dorothy Fletcher, and Glenda Adams. He was the brother-in-law of Diane Fletcher, Elaine Fletcher, Dorothy Marchand, Rose Fletcher, Emery Gordon (wife Marliner), Alvin Gordon (wife Rosina), Jeanne Gordon, and Paula Massey. He is preceded in death by both parents and several siblings including: the late Artie Fletcher, Matthew Marchand Sr., Huey Fletcher, Ruddy Faulks Sr., Dennis Maulet Sr., and Rose Maulet. He was the grandfather of Trevon Kelley, Derrick Comeaux, Kaelyn Green, Briah Carriere, Emanuel Green, Camille Green, Gregory Ducre Jr. and Marley Fletcher. Micheal also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Micheal had a playful charm, razor-sharp wit, and wondrous breadth of knowledge and experiences. This allowed him to impact the city of New Orleans from the Lower 9th ward to City Hall. Born to Arthur and Elizabeth Taylor Fletcher, Micheal spent most of his life in the Lower Ninth Ward, where he attended McCarty Elementary and GW Carver Senior High School. He was an avid baseball player and a bright student. Micheal went on to major in political science at Xavier University where he was also a member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. Micheal then had a diverse career. He worked on an oil rig, in security, as an orderly, ran for political office, and spent years as a civil servant. There was no work experience that he talked about more than the time he spent as a roofer with his father and brothers. As a member of P.R.I.D.E., ROOTS, and SOUL, he encouraged participation in the political process. Micheal was on the original committee for the French Quarter Festival and spent years working as an integral part of the N.O. Jazz and Heritage Festival. He was a board member of the following civic organizations: Lower 9th Ward Neighborhood Council, Total Community Action, New Orleans Health Corps, and the Lower 9th Civic Association. He was initiated into the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free and accepted Masons of Louisiana, Phoenix 226 in December 1983 and rose to the 32nd degree. Micheal loved politics, hunting, fishing, tinkering, science fiction, and his family. As a father, he expected academic excellence and personal accountability, but more importantly, he loved just spending time with his family and friends. For Micheal, family extended far beyond his wife and children. He was a community father, mentoring and guiding nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, and even their friends. Meeting Mr. Fletcher was always a memorable experience. Somehow he always had a “project” for someone to do and a story or two to share. Micheal was always willing to help, always willing to lend a hand, and above all else he was willing to listen. After working in several areas of city government, he retired from his position as Deputy Director of Property Management for the City of New Orleans. In 2006, he and his family relocated to Slidell, LA., where he resided until he passed away. Micheal Eber Fletcher, Sr. will surely be missed, but he will be celebrated and appreciated.
