Joseph LaBruno Obituary

Joseph Stephen Dominic LaBruno was called to eternal rest on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at the age of 68. Joseph passed away peacefully in the care of the best nurses and doctors at St. Tammany Hospital after a fifteenth day fight with Covid-19.

Joseph was born on February 24, 1953 in New York to Joseph LaBruno an immigrant from Sicily, Italy, who served in the United States Navy, and VonDaLlee Nungesser a tap dancer, head seamstress, and pianist from New York City.

Joseph was quite a character to say the least, whose impact and influence to those around him was UNFORGETTABLE. His strong Italian roots made him a passionate lover of food, family, dance, music, and possibly a drink or two too many. He was also quite the storyteller to those who listened, he could make one feel as if he or she were two, on the streets of the Bronx in the 1960’s. Joe recently was reconnected with some of his friends from that time, such as Bobby Gorwits, Robert Seiss, Rose Maggio, and Brian McGuckin, we must not leave out his Louisiana friends Jimmy Patton, Britt Hopkins, and Lods. Each one of these boys were a great part of Joe’s story.

He was employed with the Hyatt Regency as an Air-Conditioning and Heating specialist in his early years. From there he attended truck driving school, where he received his certification and drove the big rigs for years for Randy Reboul who is still a friend of Joe’s today.

Finally, Joe followed his heart and love of cooking, and received a diploma in Culinary Arts and Occupation. Joseph was employed at Butter Krisp Diner for Gil Copeland a dear friend for the past ten years.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Debra Gatiana Veronica Murphy “Big Bertha”, niece Vanessa Ann Brunet, and fiancé Terri Serpas. Joseph is survived by his son Joseph Paul Rando, and niece/daughter VondaLeigh LaBruno Murphy, as well as nephews Bobby and Terri Murphy.

He was also the uncle of Gage and John Brunet, Dale and Destiney Boudreaux, and Annalysse Casimiro, Giannia and Lauren Murphy, Dalton and Cage Rando. We must not leave out his adopted Chalmette family Adria, David, Melissa, Shannon, and Chandra Messick, Jason and Michelle Rando, Shana and Brianna Crochet, and Angela, Bob, and Virginia Serpas.

Joseph LaBruno’s Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, March 19, 2021 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 2320 Paris Road, Chalmette, LA 70043 at Noon. We ask that friends and family join us. Visitation begins at 11:00 AM until Mass starts. A Celebration of his life will be held at Rocky & Carlos’ Restaurant immediately following the Mass, so that we may all enjoy some authentic Italian cuisine and reminisce about our times with Joe.
