George Hachtel Obituary

George W. Hachtel

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio during the Great Depression, George Walter Hachtel peacefully passed away on the 12th of September, 2022 at the age of 94. He was born July 23, 1928 to the late Lillian Hachtel Armstrong and George Michael Hachtel. He grew up loving all sports and especially treasured the hunting and fishing trips with his dad, uncle, and his brother Ray in northern Ohio & Canada. After graduating from high school, he was proud of his service with the Marine Corps Reserves, then as a MP with the 101st Army Airborne Division during the Korean conflict.

After returning home to Ohio, George worked at various jobs while attending Cleveland State University. He met and married his beloved partner of 65 years, Jeanette (Jan) Stuchel and had three children. George belonged to a social club called Club Unique made up of 25 pals returning from the war who bonded, married, had kids, and grandkids. We’re happy to report the next generation is continuing this “unique” social bonding that was started over 65 years ago by their parents.

George was a District Sales Manager for the Morton Salt Company and earned membership into The Solarium Society for outstanding district sales performances. In 1977, Morton Salt transferred the family to Mandeville where his sales territory included New Orleans, LA and other mid-southern states. George retired from Morton in 1992 after 32 years.

In Louisiana, George enjoyed an active retirement. He played sports for the church…softball, basketball, and volleyball. He also played tennis and golf…or any sport using a ball! He was a member of The Original Krewe of Orpheus, Covington Country Club’s “On the Road Gang,” and often was found helping friends, family, and his church with their building or repairing projects. He was also a volunteer at the Samaritan Center. In hot Louisiana summers, George & Jan often packed up their 5th-wheel camper and went north to explore, but always came back home to Mandeville.

Surviving family includes his wife Jeanette (Jan) Hachtel, his son Mark Hachtel (Andrea), and daughters Gail Hachtel Miller (Fred), and Jill Hachtel McSorley (Tim). He was adored by his five grandchildren, Ashley Mossy (Roy), Maddie Smith (Dillon), Kayla Duddleston (Sage), and Molly & James McSorley. George & Jan also have 3 great grandchildren Callan, Millie, & Noah Mossy.

George loved his family and friends and will be remembered as a true gentleman with a great sense of humor, love of athletics and dance, a natural teacher, and he will be greatly missed. Please share thoughts, fondest memories, and condolences online at www.serenitycovington.com.

Thank you to all the amazing Egan Hospice staff and caregivers who were a blessing to our family. Their support allowed George to age in place in his home and helped Jan cope as his primary care giver.

A Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 10:30 AM, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM at St. Timothy United Methodist Church, 335 Asbury Dr, Mandeville, LA 70471. A private family burial will take place after the celebration of life ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.
