Elizabeth Quaid Modinger, aka “Mrs. Betty” aka “Momma Modinger” peacefully passed away and went to Glory on the morning of 31 January 2019 at the age of 81. A native of Adare, Ireland, she was one of nine children of Jack and Mary Quaid. She eventually came to the US after meeting and being courted by American Hodgson Modinger in Limerick.
Betty was a selfless server of the poor and the needy throughout life, humbly dedicating much of her efforts to help the Heart Association, the Covington Food Bank, Hospice, Habitat for Humanity and Caritas. She made impact through the quiet deeds of love, sacrifice, selflessness and prayer. She saw the bright light in everyone, especially the poor, the lonely and the needy of heart. Her door was always open with Irish tea and food on the table for all.
Betty joins her parents as well siblings Joe, Anna, John and baby Patrick in Heaven. She is survived by her husband Hodgson; her sons John and Edward and daughter (in-law) Linda; her grandchildren Ashley, Jack, Noah and Isabelle; her siblings Barbara, Patsy, Helen and Eithne; 30 nieces and nephews; and scores of non-blood-related, but genuine “family” from the communities of Covington, New Orleans, the US and Ireland. Special thanks to the communities of Covington and New Orleans for opening their hearts to Mom.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Tuesday, 05 February 2019 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, LA. Visitation will begin at 9:30am, with Words of Remembrance at 11:00am and Mass at 11:30am.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Northshore Food Bank or Habitat For Humanity would be appreciated.
