Allan Breslin Obituary

Allan Charles Breslin passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2021, surrounded by family. As Sugar Magnolia played in the background, ‘Big Al’ left this world and began his next long, strange trip. Though his life is celebrated, he is dearly missed by surviving family including his wife of nearly 42 years, Eileen Breslin, his daughter Maureen Kloor, and his son, Michael Breslin. Son in law Brett Kloor and daughter in law Vanessa Breslin along with Grandchildren Colby Kloor, and Lincoln Breslin mourn his passing as do several cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.

Big Al, Olé, Breslin, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Friend, PFC, and even Counselor to a lucky few (unlucky?), Allan was many things to many people. He was always happy to meet new friends and dedicated to helping whoever asked.

Allan was born to Leonard James Breslin and Emogene Thorn Breslin in San Francisco in 1948. Allan’s childhood was a great adventure set in the misty, wooded hills of Ross, California. He spent his time climbing Mount Tamalpais, fishing in Ross Creek and swimming in the Pacific Ocean.

He attended High School at Redwood High and earned his Associates at the College of Marin in 1961. Joining the Marine Corps Reserves in 1966 during the height of the Vietnam war, he was extremely lucky to never be called oversees, though he felt guilty about this blessing as he lost so many friends in combat. Allan moved to New Orleans for the first time around 1968. He got work as a bouncer on Bourbon Street and dug graves at the Metairie Cemetery as he began to fall in love with the city that would eventually become his family home. Al returned to California in 1972 to finish his bachelors at Sonoma State University and following graduation he moved back to New Orleans and joined the New Orleans Rugby Club through which he met his wife, Eileen, and was married in 1979.

In 1980 Al was working at Gorilla Construction when he and Eileen became pregnant with their first child, Michael. He decided to go back to school, enrolling in Tulane Law School and earning his law degree in 1986. First working at the New Orleans District Attorney’s Office, Allan shortly changed his practice to criminal defense work and moved from the Lower 9th Ward to Covington. In August of 1987, the family was blessed with their second child, Maureen. Allan raised his family in St. Tammany, while he continued to grow his practice and become involved in the community.

Allan worked until the day before his passing, fighting for people who needed someone to defend them and offering a hand to anyone who asked. He loved to learn and to try new things. He was constantly looking for any excuse to throw a party, join a club, or learn a new skill. Some of his proudest moments were when he was working to help others, like his Toys for Tots organization that donated soccer balls to Costa Rican children and his numerous donations to Wounded Warriors. Recently, Allan enjoyed his certification as a Louisiana Master Gardner, was very active in the Louisiana Democratic Party, and was proud to go through the St. Tammany Leadership Program. Quick with a smile and a joke, he lived a huge life, never leaving a room without making friends with everyone in it. It is sure that he is doing the same wherever he is now, meeting new souls and telling jokes, enjoying the new adventure he is on and making new stories.

Private services are planned, but memories are welcome at www.serenitycovington.com. A public memorial date will be set in the future. In lieu of flowers donations to Second Harvest Food Bank or charity of your choice are welcome.
